Stages:
Sagwassersäge - Sagwasserklause - Tummelplatz - Großalmeyerschloss - Tummelplatz – Sagwassersäge
Tour description:
We start our tour from the parking area Sagwassersäge.
Alternatively, from the Igelbus stop Sagwassersäge: first follow the asphalt road for a short distance heading northeast to the parking area Sagwassersäge.
Then we follow the signpost Hauptwanderweg ‘Baumgruppe’ (Main hiking path) towards Lusen National Park Center (NP-Zentrum Lusen). First, we cross the Sagwasser on a wooden bridge and then walk slightly upwards through the typical National Park landscape of mixed mountain forest, until we meet at a crossroads. There, we turn right and change to the marking ‘Rippenfarn’ (Deer fern). Soon we see the mountain stream again. We will follow it for quite some time. After about 45 minutes, we reach the Sagwasserklause (945 meters above sea level). The former reservoir is that interesting, because nature slowly recaptures it and reintegrates it into its dynamics. Here we have opportunity for a rest, until we continue our tour uphill. After some time we reach a crossroads.
We turn right with the sign ‘Grünes Dreieck’ (green triangle) towards Tummelplatz. After a small dip, the path leads us parallel to a slope and offers varied forest impressions. Different species of trees, small and large ones, standing and lying deadwood – they offer a variety of habitat niches for plants, animals and fungi. After quite some time, the marking 'Arnika' (Arnica) joins us from the right hand side. This will be our descent later. First, however, we walk straight ahead, until the Tummelplatz, a former pasture, appears in front of us (1140 meters above sea level). At Tummelplatz we can do a short detour to the Großalmeyerschloss. When weather is good, we will be rewarded with great views towards Lusen and the surrounding area. The climbing takes about 10 minutes. The trail starts directly at the cabin at Tummelplatz and leads into the forest past an information board. On the last few meters to the viewpoint (1196 meters above sea level) surefootedness is required (Attention! Slippery when wet!).
We hike back to the Tummelplatz on the same way. With the ‘Grünes Dreieck’ (green triangle) we continue on the way we already know, until we reach the junction (described above). But now we choose the left path with the marking ‘Arnika’ (Arnica) towards Sagwassersäge. The path leads gently downhill and crosses a gravel path after a while. Our trail continues straight ahead and finally brings us back to Sagwassersäge. From here, we walk the last track until we arrive at the parking lot again.
Alternatively, back to the Igelbus stop: After a short distance on the asphalt road, we reach the Igelbus stop.

Did you know it?
Schwelle or Klause are artificial reservoirs that were built especially in the 19th century for timber drift. With their water, the tree trunks thrown into the mountain streams could be washed out of the forest. Some of the Klausen are now under protection order.
Since the beginning of the 19th century, the Tummelplatz was used as a gathering place for cattle herders and grazing livestock during the summer months, until the forest pastures were abandoned in the 1950s. Such meadows, without trees due to human use, are called “Schachten” throughout Bavarian Forest. The Tummelplatzhütte, as a former forestry service cottage, is whiteness of former life in and around the forest.
The Großalmeyerschloss is a rock formation at the highest point of Hohlstein (1196 meters above sea level). This rock is high above Reschbachtal and therefore offers the best view over National Park regions - to Finsterau and Freyung, but also to the highest national park summits from Lusen to Rachel.
