Mountaintop Look-out Geotope

The highest summit in the Bavarian Forest National Park rises mightily above the Rachelsee.

The quaint woodlands around Rachel (1453 meters above sea level) have always been considered mysterious. Perhaps this is why the Großer Rachel with its legendary mountain lake has always been a popular destination for many nature enthusiasts. A completely new kind of forest develops after numerous windthrows and bark beetle attacks: in the midst of the standing and lying tree trunks grow young spruces, rowan berries and isolated sycamore maples. The Großer Rachel offers great view of the surrounding raised areas and up towards the neighboring Czech Šumava National Park.
