Stately home/country estate Historical structure Historical building

The estate is privately owned, tours of the garden only on certain  dates.

The old Varste manor is located south of the village of Blender on the left bank of the Weser. The mighty avenue of oak trees planted around the turn of the century lines the path from the main road to the Hesse family farm in Blender-Varste.

The history of the Varste estate dates back to 1435. In this year, a farmstead in Varste was documented, which Heinrich Korlehake had held as a fief from the Counts of Hoya. In 1575, the estate was then sold by Count Otto VIII von Hoya to his wife Countess Agnes von Hoya. The countess had a windmill built in 1577 and lived on Varste until her death on September 15, 1589.

In 1603, the von Heimbruch family received the noble estate of Varste with 47 Meierhöfe and the tithes of Intschede in exchange for property in the Harburg area as a fief from the Dukes of Brunswick and Lüneburg. In 1606, the daughter of Jürgen von Heimbruch and his first wife Anna von Ameluxen, Gertrud von Heimbruch, married Heinrich Korlehake Hermeling, Burgmann on the hereditary farm at Thedinghausen.

The original manor house was replaced in 1861 by a new two-storey manor house in solid clinker brick construction. In 1863, a pavilion in the neoclassical style was also built in honor of King George V and Queen Marie of Hanover.

In 1903, the widow of the estate owner Carl Johann Christian von Heimbruch, Lonny von Helldorf, had the estate garden redesigned.

The historic garden, including the pathways of the time, was redesigned in 2010 according to the original drawing from 1900. It was financed with grants from the VGH Foundation and the state of Lower Saxony. The ensemble of park, pavilion and avenue is a listed building.
