The railroad was once used for passenger and freight transport, but today it is used for guests.
At that time, the 58.8 km long line from Rahden to Nienburg was mainly used for local passenger traffic and especially for the transportation of coal, agricultural goods and peat. With the decline of agriculture and increasing motorization, this route was finally closed in 1996. What remains is the approximately 25-kilometre route between Rahden and Uchte, which is now operated by the museum railroad with its historic railcars in just under an hour. It passes through beautiful and peaceful parkland with many old farms, past grazing herds of cattle, which are not even disturbed by the frequent whistling of the train. There are several stops along the way and you can explore the charming surroundings on foot or by bike on well-maintained paths.
The "Rahden rail bus" runs once a month between Uchte and Rahden from mid-May. Bicycles can be taken along for a fee. There are also special trips in various villages, where Pickert, coffee or Schlachteplatte is served and Santa Claus trips are offered. A lovingly furnished wedding room has been created in the historic wedding station in Lavelsloh.
