The infamous Nazi war criminal Josef Mengele, who came from a Günzburg-based industrial family, continues to cast a monstrous shadow over the city. The memorial consists of a text panel surrounded by individual eyes (about 50 pieces, created in 2004/05 by the 10th-grade students of the Dossenberger-Gymnasium) and pairs of eyes (about 25 pieces, created in 2004/05 by the art course, K 12, of the Maria-Ward-Gymnasium). The individual eyes and pairs of eyes were modeled in clay during class, then air-dried and fired. From the "clay eyes," the foundry created wax models using a silicone molding process, which were then used to produce the actual casting molds. The memorial was unveiled on March 8, 2005.
