Chapel Oberbechingen by Frank Lattke

The extraordinary building is one of the Seven Chapels of the Siegfried and Elfriede Denzel Foundation. The foundation, whose purpose is to promote art, history, church, religion and culture, had the chapel built by architect Frank Lattke on the edge of the Dattenhauser Ried directly on the DonauTäler premium cycle path.

The chapel stands strikingly in the open landscape and seems to be in motion due to the different facades and the height of the roof ridge. Inside, one comes to rest, the gaze is directed towards the cross in the light. Light and dark model the space, whose wooden materiality embraces all the senses. An interior that conceals, enables concentration and shows the landscape in detail. The chapel is a place of contemplation in the vastness of the landscape, which becomes clear in contrast to the narrowness of the spatial experience. Inside, soft sidelight falls through tall window slits, candle glints and a cross. A holy water font and candlesticks decorate the interior. The structure is a sign of contemporary craftsmanship, honestly telling the story of how it was made.

The Seven Chapels aims to be a landmark and an architectural landmark in the landscape, developing the tradition of chapel building in contemporary design.
