Schnöllermarkt, Günzburg

Waterpower has shaped Günzburg since ancient times – discover its history on the Water Trail.

Before the steam engine and electricity, water was one of the most important sources of power. As early as Roman times, the rivers of the region were used to power mills and workshops. A dedication stone, displayed in the local museum and donated by millers, honors the god Neptune and reflects the great importance of water.

Until the 20th century, waterwheels powered mills, grinding shops, as well as saw and hammer works, before turbines replaced the traditional technology. Along the Günz and its tributaries, numerous water power plants can be found, which once played a key role in Günzburg's prosperity.

The Günzburg Water Trail brings this history to life. At six stations, the historical and modern use of water power is vividly presented, offering an exciting insight into the connection between nature, technology, and the city’s history.
