Market fountain (8)
The Guntia-Fountain depicts details from the city's history.
The fountain, inaugurated as part of the redesign of the Market Square (1983/84), was created by sculptor Jan Bormann from Castrop-Rauxel and incorporates many historical details of the city. At the center, the river goddess Guntia, the namesake of the city, lies in the octagonal water basin. Around the basin, one can see a Roman coin, a medallion depicting various towers of the city, and a Maria Theresa thaler. The Tetrakaidecahedron (fourteen-faced shape) is adorned with the coat of arms of the city of Sternberg (which commemorates the displaced people from Sternberg/Moravia, for whom Günzburg took on sponsorship in 1955), the coat of arms of the city of Günzburg, the Austrian double eagle, and the Great Bavarian State Coat of Arms. The wreath beneath it displays three crowned swan necks from the coat of arms of the Landvogt Baron Christoph von Ramschwag (also seen on the weather vane on the Lower Gate). The common people turned these noble creatures into geese, and thus the nickname for all Günzburg residents became "Gäiskräga" (Goose Neck).
