Sehenswerte Gebäude Museen/Sammlungen
Historic school building and versatile local history museum in Günzburg.

Empress Maria Theresa appointed the Piarist Order to Günzburg to improve the school system. The Piarists had dedicated their mission to the education of boys. Built between 1755 and 1757, the building served as a school until 1978 before being converted into a local history museum in 1982.

The museum features 14 exhibition rooms covering a total area of 620 square meters. Its collections include prehistoric archaeology, city history, paintings and sacred sculptures from 1500 onward, furniture, folklore, and a mineralogical-paleontological collection (the Wetzler Collection). A highlight of the 18th-century exhibition room is a 16-square-meter stucco ceiling from the early 1700s, transferred from a demolished house.

A dedicated exhibition room explores Günzburg’s Habsburg heritage, while a toy collection from around 1900 delights younger visitors. The museum also includes two fully furnished Biedermeier-style rooms and an exhibition space showcasing the 4,000-year history of settlement on the Reisensburg Castle Hill.
