Second certified hiking trail of the Fichtelgebirgsverein Bischofsgrün. Along the young Main, Weißmainfelsen, Weißmainquelle, Ochsenkopf summit with landmark, ...

The varied trail offers great views as well as shady paths in the forests of the Ochsenkopf region. For the most part, the route runs along interesting climbs that give hikers a feeling of elation. There are great views from the Weißmainfelsen with the typical wool sack weathering of the granite and from the Asenturm observation tower at the summit of the Ochsenkopf.

At 1,024 m, the Ochsenkopf is the second highest mountain in the Fichtelgebirge. A hike up this “local mountain” of the people of Bischofsgrün is a “must” for every hiker visiting the Fichtelgebirge.

The starting point of the certified Weißmain-Ochsenkopf-Steig hiking trail is located above the Ochsenkopf Nord valley station. The signpost there describes the trail. The circular markings indicate the route, which leads out of the village in an easterly direction, past the winter sports facilities and into the high valley of the young Weißer Main. A romantic path along the river takes you to Karches (former blast furnace), where the Waldrasthaus am See invites you to stop for a bite to eat.

The route now climbs up to the Weißmainfelsen rock, which is reached via forest roads and later on a narrow, stony path. The climb up the steps to this huge granite bastion offers beautiful views of the Schneeberg massif. The trail leads up to the Ochsenkopf summit via the Weißmain spring. After a stop at the Asenturm tower, the viewing platform beckons with a comprehensive view of the Hohe Fichtelgebirge. After the detour to the “landmark rock”, the route follows a somewhat rough mountain path in a direct line down to the Vogelherd and over the hill rock, which offers a magnificent view of Bischofsgrün, back to the starting point.

Weitere Infos

As a shortcut, you can take the cable car down to Bischofsgrün after a hearty snack at the Asenturm. Tickets are available directly at the mountain station.
